Chimney Repointing

Chimney Repointing from Oakcrest Roofing

Mortar is meant to be the sacrificial part of a wall, wearing away slowly so the bricks do not. On a chimney that process is faster, because the stack is exposed on every side. Once the joints have eroded a few millimetres back from the face, rainwater sits in them, freezes and pushes out more mortar, and the brickwork itself starts to suffer.

We rake out the old mortar to a consistent depth, brush and dampen the joints, then repoint with a mix suited to the brick. On older soft brick or stone stacks that often means a lime-based mortar, which lets the masonry breathe, because hard cement mixes can trap moisture and damage soft bricks. The joints are finished to match the profile of the rest of the stack.

The process

How we carry out chimney repointing

From the first look at the roof to the final clear-up, this is how the job runs.

  1. 1

    Step 1 of 4

    Assess the joints

We check how deep the erosion goes and identify the original mortar and brick.

  2. 2

    Step 2 of 4

    Rake out

Old mortar is removed with hand and power tools without damaging the brick edges.

  3. 3

    Step 3 of 4

    Repoint

Joints are filled with the chosen mortar in layers and finished to profile.

  4. 4

    Step 4 of 4

    Cure and clean

The new pointing is protected from rain or frost while it sets, and the roof is cleared.

Our drone roof survey and aerial inspection service provides an instant, efficient and safe way to assess the condition of your roof. Using HD drones, we capture detailed images and videos of hard-to-reach areas, identifying potential issues like leaks, cracks, and structural damage.

This non-invasive method reduces risks and disruption and results in accurate data without the need for roof ladders or expensive scaffolding. Ideal for residential, commercial or industrial properties, this service ensures thorough, cost-effective inspections every time.

We advise that you get your roof professionally surveyed every 2-3 years to keep up with any potential damage and early signs of wear and tear. If we catch minor repairs early, they will not become a more serious problem in the future.

FAQs

Common questions about chimney repointing

How do I know my chimney needs repointing?

Look for recessed or crumbling joints, gaps between bricks, or sand and mortar collecting in the gutters. Damp inside around the chimney breast can also be a sign.

Why use lime mortar?

Older bricks and stone are softer and more porous. Lime mortar is more flexible and lets moisture evaporate through the joints, protecting the masonry. Strong cement mortar forces moisture out through the bricks instead, which can make their faces flake.

Can repointing be done in winter?

Mortar needs protecting from frost while it cures, so repointing is best carried out in milder weather. If work is urgent, we can protect the stack, or make a temporary repair and return.

Is repointing enough to stop a leak?

It depends on the cause. If water is getting in through eroded joints, yes. If the leak is from the flaunching or the flashings, those need attention too, which is why we check the whole stack.
