Felt Roofs
Felt Roofs from Oakcrest Roofing
Built-up felt has been the standard flat roof covering in the UK for decades, and the modern torch-on version is far tougher than the thin felts that gave flat roofs a bad name. A typical system uses a base layer and a cap sheet bonded together with heat, with a mineral finish on top to protect the bitumen from sunlight and wear.
Felt suits tighter budgets and copes well with complicated roofs, because it can be cut and lapped around upstands, pipes and rooflights. The key is preparation: a dry, firm deck, correct falls and well-formed upstands at walls. We take extra care when torching near timber and fascias, using cold-applied details where a flame would be unsafe, and check the roof over after the last heat work each day.

What's included
What our felt roofs service covers
The work that goes into the job, set out in your written quote.
- Multi-layer torch-on system rather than a single sheet, for better resistance to splits

- Drip trims at the edges to throw water into the gutter
- Deck boards replaced where they have softened

The process
How we carry out felt roofs
From the first look at the roof to the final clear-up, this is how the job runs.

Step 1 of 4
Strip back
The old felt is removed and the deck checked for soft spots, which are cut out and replaced.
- 2
Step 2 of 4
Base layer
A base sheet is laid and bonded to the deck, giving the system a sound foundation.
- 3
Step 3 of 4
Cap sheet
The mineral cap sheet is torched on with staggered laps, then dressed into upstands and over trims.
- 4
Step 4 of 4
Edges and checks
Trims and flashings are fixed, outlets connected, and every lap checked for full bonding before we leave.

Why choose us
Why homeowners choose Oakcrest for felt roofs
A written price first
You get an itemised quote before any work starts, so you know what you are paying for and nothing changes once the scaffold is up.
Photos of what we find
We photograph the parts of the roof you cannot see from the ground, so you can judge the problem for yourself rather than take our word for it.
Repair or replace, honestly
If a repair will see the roof through, that is what we quote. When a roof is at the end of its life we tell you, so you can plan instead of paying twice.
Tidy sites, waste removed
Your garden, drive and windows are protected while we work, and every old tile, batten and offcut leaves with us at the end of the job.

A felt roof is costed according to:
- Roof size and the number of layers specified
- Upstands, rooflights and pipes the felt has to be detailed around
- How much of the deck needs replacing
- Trims and flashings needed at the edges and walls

No hidden extras
Scaffold and waste in the price

Aerial inspections
Drone roof surveys
Our drone roof survey and aerial inspection service provides an instant, efficient and safe way to assess the condition of your roof. Using HD drones, we capture detailed images and videos of hard-to-reach areas, identifying potential issues like leaks, cracks, and structural damage.
This non-invasive method reduces risks and disruption and results in accurate data without the need for roof ladders or expensive scaffolding. Ideal for residential, commercial or industrial properties, this service ensures thorough, cost-effective inspections every time.
We advise that you get your roof professionally surveyed every 2-3 years to keep up with any potential damage and early signs of wear and tear. If we catch minor repairs early, they will not become a more serious problem in the future.
